DC Unveils Three New Animated Projects: From a ‘Joker’ Anime to ‘Absolute Batman’ and ‘Krypto’ Series

According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation launched a new wave of animated projects during their first-ever joint panel at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France. The event was met with enthusiastic acclaim from the audience, as Peter Safran (Co-Chairman and CEO of DC Studios) and Sam Register (President of Warner Bros. Animation) took the stage alongside several creators to map out the future of this superhero universe.

The most prominent titles announced at the major event include:

1. Joker: Laugh Riot (Anime Series) In collaboration with Sola Entertainment, DC is producing its first-ever official anime series centered on the Clown Prince of Crime. The project is directed by Yasuhiro Aoki (director of the upcoming feature film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim). The gripping premise begins when Batman is murdered by an unknown assailant—an event that infuriates the Joker, who feels his greatest rival and his exclusive “right to kill” have been stolen from him. Embarking on a vengeful crusade, the Joker unleashes a brutal war across Gotham’s underworld to hunt down Batman’s killer. However, this dangerous mission inadvertently pulls him closer to the role of a vigilante, forcing him to confront the bitter truth that without Batman, he has no identity.

2. Absolute Batman (Adult Animated Series) The applause at Annecy reached a fever pitch with the official confirmation of an adult animated series adaptation of the best-selling and highly popular Absolute Batman comic books. The series will be helmed by its original comic book co-creator, Scott Snyder, who serves as executive producer and showrunner, alongside co-creator Nick Dragotta, who handles design and executive production. The Absolute comic line stood out as one of DC’s most massive successes in 2025, with the debut issue of Absolute Batman alone going into its 11th printing and selling over 6 million copies.

3. Krypto (Animated Series) Targeting younger audiences and families, DC has greenlit a new series based on Krypto the Superdog. C.H. Greenblatt, the creator of beloved animated hits like Chowder and Jellystone!, is developing the vibrant project. The story follows Krypto as he accidentally falls in with a neighborhood gang of bumbling animal criminals. They quickly discover that this lovable canine is a destructive powerhouse who inadvertently thwarts their heist plans. However, Krypto’s innocent and pure nature gradually begins to reform and redeem these comedic villains.

Additional Project Updates Beyond the three new flagship titles, DC executives shared further insights into their ongoing production slate:

• The adult-targeted series Creature Commandos and Batman: Caped Crusader received massive ovations from the crowd, with the latter confirmed to premiere on Prime Video on July 31.
• Acclaimed comic book writer Tom King expressed immense excitement regarding the development of the Mister Miracle animated adaptation, stating: “With animation at its current peak, I believe we can create stories on par with television masterpieces like Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, and Mad Men.”
• The animated feature Get Jiro! is scheduled to debut on Adult Swim this fall.
• In the adolescent demographic, the studio highlighted My Adventures with Green Lantern (drawing anime-inspired creative cues from the success of My Adventures with Superman), Starfire!, and DC Super Powers. Finally, production was officially confirmed for Season 10 of Teen Titans Go!, cementing its status as the longest-running series in DC history.
