Colleen Hoover to Produce Ali Hazelwood’s Bestselling Novel ‘Love, Theoretically’ for Amazon MGM Studios; Sofia Alvarez Set to Direct
According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, Amazon MGM Studios has acquired the feature film adaptation rights to Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel, Love, Theoretically.
Colleen Hoover, the author behind the hit novel It Ends with Us, is set to produce the project alongside her partner Lauren Levine under their Heartbones Entertainment banner. Max Siemers and Tanner Anderson will also produce through Magic Hour Entertainment. Sofia Alvarez, the filmmaker behind Along for the Ride, is attached to direct and adapt the screenplay for the romantic comedy. Alvarez will additionally serve as an executive producer alongside Ali Hazelwood.
The story of Love, Theoretically follows two rival physicists who collide in a whirlwind of academic competition and fake identities. This project marks a reunion for Siemers and Alvarez, who previously collaborated on the first two films of Netflix’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy.
This announcement comes just ahead of the release of another Hazelwood adaptation, The Love Hypothesis, which is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on September 23. That film stars Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman.
Alvarez, a New York-based playwright and filmmaker, is best known for scripting the film adaptations of Jenny Han’s bestselling novels To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You for Netflix. Her directorial debut, Along for the Ride, based on the novel by Sarah Dessen, premiered on Netflix in May 2022. Alvarez is currently adapting Rebecca Ross’s fantasy-romance epic Divine Rivals for Paramount.
Hoover’s Heartbones Entertainment has also established a growing footprint with Amazon MGM Studios. The studio is currently producing Verity, based on Hoover’s smash-hit thriller, starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett, which is set for a theatrical release on October 2. Heartbones’ first feature film, Reminders of Him, was released theatrically by Universal in March, grossing $89 million worldwide against a $25 million production budget.
Magic Hour Entertainment recently wrapped production on the feature film The Dead, directed by Academy Award nominee Carlos López Estrada. The silent film stars Estrada alongside Camila Mendes and Eugenio Derbez. Producer Max Siemers is widely recognized for producing Netflix’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy, which significantly helped revive the teen romantic comedy genre. His other producing credits include Love at First Sight, Spontaneous, and Before I Fall.
