Box Office Prediction: ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Jackass’ Hit Theaters, But Prove No Match for ‘Toy Story 5’
According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, the feature films Supergirl and Jackass: Best and Last are headed to theaters this weekend, but neither is expected to challenge Pixar’s beloved Toy Story 5 for the top spot at the box office.
Supergirl is projected to bring in between $47 million and $50 million from 3,600 theaters in its North American debut. Meanwhile, the final installment of the Jackass franchise is targeting an opening weekend of $10 million to $12 million from 2,800 screens. However, Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 is poised to comfortably maintain its box office crown in its second weekend, with stunning projections of $80 million to $90 million.
Supergirl serves as a follow-up to James Gunn’s Superman, which successfully rebooted the DC Universe last year. That film, starring David Corenswet, launched to a massive $125 million opening and went on to gross $618 million worldwide—a highly encouraging figure during a broader downturn for the comic book genre. While Superman benefited from featuring one of the most recognizable icons in pop culture history, Supergirl shifts the spotlight to his cousin, Kara Zor-El, a character less familiar to mainstream audiences. This intergalactic adventure carries a heavy $170 million production budget (excluding global marketing costs) and will rely on strong audience reception to turn a profit. Milly Alcock stars as the titular hero under the direction of Craig Gillespie, known for I, Tonya and Cruella.
On the other hand, Jackass: Best and Last, starring Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, and the rest of the crew, arrives as the sixth and final chapter of the long-running comedy franchise. If the film fails to outperform current tracking, it will mark the lowest opening weekend in the franchise’s history. Its 2022 predecessor enjoyed a much stronger $23 million debut. However, because this final installment was produced on a modest $10 million budget, its path to profitability remains relatively straightforward. The softer tracking may stem from the fact that the film isn’t entirely original material, with a significant portion dedicated to a retrospective “greatest hits” compilation of the crew’s classic stunts.
Ultimately, Toy Story 5 continues a stellar hot streak for animated sequels, following in the blockbuster footsteps of recent hits like Inside Out 2 and Zootopia 2. After just a few days in theaters, the film has already amassed $176 million domestically and $328 million globally, cementing what is shaping up to be one of Hollywood’s hottest post-pandemic summers.
