Big Little Lies Season 3 Officially Confirmed

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, HBO has officially moved forward with season three of Big Little Lies, with Francesca Sloane set to write the premiere episode. Deadline reports that the creator and showrunner of Mr. & Mrs. Smith will join series creator David E. Kelley, along with stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, as executive producers on the new season.

Sloane, who signed a two-year exclusive deal with HBO, joined the project after production on season two of Mr. & Mrs. Smith at Amazon was delayed. HBO content chief Casey Bloys said last fall that the network was waiting for Liane Moriarty’s new novel before deciding on season three.

That new book, a sequel to Big Little Lies, has reportedly been completed and will be published in 2026. Moriarty revealed that the story will include a time jump, catching up with the Monterey Five at a point when their children are now teenagers.

HBO began searching for a writer over the summer, though Sloane was not part of that initial process. Originally expected to return as showrunner for Mr. & Mrs. Smith season two, Sloane shifted to HBO after the Amazon series stalled due to cast-related issues and her contract with Amazon MGM ended.

Big Little Lies first aired in 2017 as a limited series, but its critical acclaim and high ratings led HBO to commission a second season in 2019, again written and executive produced by Kelley.

Following the second season, Kidman confirmed multiple times that a third was in development. The ensemble cast has included Zoë Kravitz, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgård, Adam Scott, James Tupper, Jeffrey Nordling, and Meryl Streep.

Season one, which centered on five women entangled in a murder mystery, won eight Primetime Emmy Awards out of 16 nominations, including Outstanding Limited Series, Best Directing, and acting honors for Kidman, Skarsgård, and Dern.

Sloane’s past credits include Atlanta and Fargo.
