‘Aquamarine’ Series Adaptation Greenlit at Disney; Emma Roberts to Guest Star and Executive Produce
According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, a television series adaptation of the beloved 2006 feature film Aquamarine has officially received a pilot order from Disney+ and Disney Channel.
Emma Roberts, one of the leading stars of the original movie, is set to guest star, reprising her role as Claire Brown in the pilot episode. In addition to her on-screen return, Roberts will serve as an executive producer on the project. The series is being penned by Sarah Watson (creator of the hit series The Bold Type), with Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, the director of the original film, returning to direct the pilot and executive produce. Susan Cartsonis, a producer on the 2006 film, is also part of the production team. The series is based on the novel of the same name by Alice Hoffman.
The official logline for the series reads: “When a teenage girl named Coral moves to a picturesque beach town, she begins a quest to uncover the truth behind her mother’s disappearance. Along the way, she discovers her mother was actually a mermaid—a revelation that awakens Coral’s own magical abilities just as dark secrets beneath the waves begin to threaten the safety of the land.”
The original Aquamarine feature film starred Emma Roberts alongside JoJo Levesque, Sara Paxton, and Jake McDorman, following two best friends who help a stranded mermaid find true love. While the film initially received a modest reception from critics upon its theatrical release, it has grown over the years into a beloved cult classic among audiences.
Following her breakout role in the film, Emma Roberts went on to star in major feature films like We’re the Millers and Palo Alto, as well as hit television series including American Horror Story and Scream Queens. Sarah Watson, the writer behind this new adaptation, previously penned multiple episodes of the popular Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
This project marks Disney’s latest effort to reimagining its legacy cinematic intellectual properties into television franchises. Disney+ has previously greenlit series adaptations of other library titles, including Holes, Witch Mountain, and the animated property The Witch Academy.
