Anya Taylor-Joy to play Joni Mitchell in Cameron Crowe biopic

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Anya Taylor-Joy has joined Cameron Crowe’s upcoming biopic Joni Mitchell. Reporter Jeff Sneider notes that the Furiosa star is in negotiations to portray the legendary singer-songwriter.
Earlier reports indicated that Meryl Streep would play Mitchell in her later years, around 2015. Kristine Froseth (The Buccaneers) had also been considered for the role, but Taylor-Joy was ultimately chosen due to her stronger resemblance to Mitchell and her star power.
Crowe hopes to begin filming in early 2026, marking his first feature since Aloha (2015). Streep is currently shooting The Devil Wears Prada 2 alongside Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci.
Taylor-Joy appeared last year in Dune: Part Two and Furiosa, and this year in The Gorge. Her upcoming film Sacrifice, directed by Romain Gavras, will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. She recently wrapped filming the Apple TV+ miniseries Lucky in July and will reprise her role in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three.
Joni Mitchell is considered one of the most influential folk singers in the world and among the greatest songwriters of all time. She began performing in Toronto nightclubs in the mid-1960s and created iconic tracks such as Big Yellow Taxi and Both Sides Now. Her 1971 album Blue was ranked by Rolling Stone as the third greatest album in history.
Crowe, who worked as a journalist for Rolling Stone in the 1970s, first interviewed Mitchell in 1979. The two remained close over the years, and in recent times he has been developing the screenplay for this biopic.
