Anya Taylor-Joy Enters Middle-earth: Cast as a New Elf in ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’
According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, Anya Taylor-Joy is the latest star to join the highly anticipated blockbuster The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
The massive project, currently in development under New Line Cinema and Warner Bros., will be directed by Andy Serkis, who is also set to reprise his iconic motion-capture role as Gollum. Other returning franchise veterans confirmed for the production include Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, and Lee Pace as King Thranduil.
Taylor-Joy, a Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee, will portray a brand-new character named Seren—a Sindar Elf from the Woodland Realm described by the studio as “a trusted and lethal agent of King Thranduil.” She joins an expanding ensemble of new additions to the Middle-earth cinematic universe, which reportedly includes Kate Winslet as Marigold, Jamie Dornan as Strider (Aragorn), and Leo Woodall as Halbarad. Warner Bros. is scheduled to release the fantasy epic globally on December 17, 2027.
This high-profile casting marks Taylor-Joy’s third major venture into a tentpole Warner Bros. franchise, following her leading performance in the Mad Max prequel Furiosa and her appearance in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series. The final installment of Villeneuve’s acclaimed trilogy, Dune: Part Three, is slated to hit theaters in the near future. Concurrently, her next immediate project is Apple TV+’s Lucky, on which she also serves as an executive producer.
Over the past two decades, Peter Jackson’s six Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films have grossed nearly $6 billion worldwide. The Hunt for Gollum aims to continue this cinematic legacy by dramatizing the search for the corrupted creature during the years preceding the events of The Fellowship of the Ring.
The project reunites the original Oscar-winning creative powerhouse, with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Zane Weiner producing. The screenplay is adapted from the extensive appendices and texts of J.R.R. Tolkien, penned by original trilogy writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens alongside Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.
In related franchise news, it was recently revealed that the subsequent film in development, titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, is being co-written by Philippa Boyens, late-night host Stephen Colbert, and Peter McGee. That project will be produced by WingNut Films in partnership with Spartina Industries.
