Michael Wright, Acclaimed Star of ‘The Five Heartbeats’ and ‘V’, Dies at 70

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Michael Wright, the prominent film and television actor renowned for his memorable roles in The Five Heartbeats, Streamers, The Principal, and the classic sci-fi series V, has passed away at the age of 70.

Susan Wright, the actor’s wife, confirmed his passing on Friday evening via a post on Instagram, writing: “With profound sadness and an indescribable weight in my heart, I announce the passing of my beloved husband, Michael Wright.”

According to a statement released by the Wright family, the artist passed away on Wednesday, August 19, in Los Angeles due to heart failure stemming from complications of a rare neurodegenerative condition known as Marchiafava-Bignami disease.

Born on April 30, 1956, in New York, Michael Wright appeared in more than 50 feature films and television series over the course of his distinguished career. Notable film credits include Robert Altman’s war drama Streamers, Sugar Hill, and The Wanderers. On television, he was widely recognized for his role in the iconic 1980s series V and HBO’s hit series Oz.

One of Wright’s most standout performances came in 1991 in the musical drama The Five Heartbeats, directed by Robert Townsend. He played Eddie King Jr., the charismatic lead singer of a R&B group whose struggles with alcohol and drug addiction ultimately force him out of the band.

In another part of her message, his wife wrote: “Michael was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend, and artist whose work touched generations. Many knew him and loved him through his roles. His talent, presence, and impact on film and television will endure forever, but for those of us who loved him closely, he was so much more than the characters the world knew. Our family mourns this profound and deeply personal loss, and we are grateful for all the expressions of sympathy and tributes.”

In a 2021 interview, Wright shared his philosophy on acting: “The biggest sin an actor can commit is to be uninteresting. I’ve always strived to make my characters compelling; I want the audience to be captivated and to wonder what’s going on behind my eyes.” He also emphasized that he harbored no regrets in life: “I’ve done everything I wanted to do, traveled everywhere, speak five languages, and seen the world; I love the experiences I’ve had in life.”
